The Best Season for Your Photoshoot

The Best Season for Your Equine or Canine Photoshoot

One question I often get asked is: “What’s the best season to book a photoshoot?” The truth is, every season offers its own unique beauty. It all depends on the look and feel you want for your portraits. Let’s explore what each season brings to your session, so you can choose the one that fits you and your four-legged best friend best.

Spring: Cool & Colorful

Spring sessions are full of color and life. The trees are blooming, the grass is green, and wildflowers are starting to appear. If you love soft pastel tones and bright greens, spring offers the perfect backdrop. There is also benefit of cool, but hopefully not cold, temperatures, and freshly blooming trees.

Ideal for: colorful blooms, fresh greenery, light and airy portraits.

Summer: Golden & Warm

Summer sessions are all about warmth and glow. Longer days mean more flexibility with scheduling, and the sunsets are often spectacular. You and your horse surrounded by lush pastures or dogs running through tall grass capture the carefree spirit of summer perfectly. With summer, however, comes hot temperatures, humidity, and horse flies. Summer is the perfect time for black background portraits, as your horse is sporting their sleek summer coat, and you don’t have to worry about looking your best in 100 degree temperatures.

Ideal for: golden hour portraits, wide open fields.

Fall: Warm & Timeless

Autumn is one of the most popular choices for equine and canine photoshoots, and for good reason. The rich, warm tones of fall leaves create a cozy, gorgeous backdrop. Horses with their darker coats and dogs with warm-colored fur especially pop against the reds, oranges, and yellows of the season.

Ideal for: bold, colorful landscapes and classic, timeless portraits.

Winter: Peaceful & Bold

While winter sessions are less common, they can be absolutely magical. Snow-covered fields create a unique look, and the muted tones of the season allow your horse or dog to stand out beautifully. Cozy touches like blankets, scarves, or festive themes can also make your winter photoshoot memorable. Winter brings the added benefit of holiday wreath sessions, which make for perfect gifts under the tree.
