Before Your Session
So, you booked a photoshoot with me! What comes next? Here are a few steps I recommend taking before the day of your shoot.
I recommend choosing your outfits at least a few weeks before your shoot. When it comes to outfits, the number one thing I encourage is to choose outfits that you are comfortable in. Your shoot should be relaxed and fun, and you shouldn’t have to be worried about how you look and feel in your clothes! This is an experience centered around you and your horse, above all.
Outfits
Outfit Examples
You can never go wrong with a white/neutral top and jeans! Make it long sleeved in the cooler temperatures, and don’t hesitate to layer with a jacket, or a vest! This outfit is very versatile, as you can change the shirt or pant color easily.
Don’t worry about stains on white shirts, I can easily edit out any slobber marks that may happen during the session.
A good choice for your second outfit is a casual flowy dress!
If you’re shooting in the fall/winter, just swap the short sleeves for a sweater, or throw on a pair of winter tights
Lastly, don’t hesitate to show more personality. If bold colors are your thing, go for it! If you and your horse are big into showing, choose your show gear for one of your outfits! Above all, I want you to feel confident in what you choose to wear.
Here are some examples of family/couple outfits for those including more than 1 person in their shoot!

2. Grooming
Your horse should be prepared as if going to a show:
Full body groomed, or bathed & dried off (weather permitting)
Green spots removed
Eyes, muzzle, and inside of ears wiped off
Hooves polished
Mane & tail brushed out and free of any shavings or dirt
If clipping your horse, please do so at least 1 week before the shoot
If you’re going for a more “show-ready” look, I recommend braiding or plaiting
3. Tack
Here are a few common tack options:
A nice halter and black lead rope, or a black rope halter
A clean show bridle
A “naked” halter, to get the tack-free look (this is a thin rope halter that will be photoshopped out)
Full tack, for photos on the ground & mounted
During Your Session
During your session, I will be working my hardest to create a fun and relaxed environment, to capture both you and your horse at your best. In order to do this, I recommend you do a few things with your horse beforehand to prepare.
Explore the areas of your property that your horse doesn’t often see. During your shoot, we may be going into new and unknown places for your horse, and in order for them to be comfortable, they need to see those places before.
Ride your horse bareback. If your horse is sound and you’re looking to do bareback photos, don’t make your first time riding them bareback be during our shoot! For safety reasons, I recommend everyone looking to do mounted photos be comfortable and confident riding their horses with minimal tack and safety gear.
Posing & Locations
Throughout the session, I will be searching for the best locations and posing that completement horse and rider.
Common places I choose to shoot are:
Grass pastures/fields
Sand pastures or arenas
Concrete or gravel paths
Anywhere next to a treeline
I have a set of poses that I use for each session, depending on how willing and comfortable the horse is. If you have a specific pose or vision that you’d like to do, please let me know!
2. Your horse
I have a few tricks up my sleeve in order to get your horse's ears forward. My #1 go-to is a horse noise app that I have on my phone. If that doesn’t work (it works on 95% of horses), we can try donkey & cow noises. I always recommend having someone who can come along and help us, but I can manage to do most things alone if that’s not possible.
A few other points:
It’s likely that your horse will want to eat the grass. Please don’t stress about this! We will make sure to bring a towel along with us, and I can edit out small amounts of grass, if needed.
If your horse isn’t behaving, is anxious, or has any other issues, try your best to stay calm! Your stress will just add onto theirs. We will take things slowly, and only do what your horse is comfortable with. I always make sure to plan enough time in each shoot for multiple small breaks, whether that be for the person, or the horse. If we both decide that there’s no chance of getting any good photos that day, we can reschedule with a small fee for travel.
3. Liberty & Riding Photos
If you really want to highlight your horse during your shoot, liberty photos are for you! All we have to do is turn your horse out into an enclosed arena, or pasture, and capture some beautiful photos of them with no tack on. These photos will only take a few extra minutes, and will give your horse an opportunity to run around and explore!
If you booked the standard or deluxe portrait package, you have the choice to do fully-tacked riding photos at the end of your shoot. Just let me know that you’re interested, and make sure to have your tack and outfits ready!
After Your Session
Around 3-6 weeks after your session, you will receive an online gallery link to view your watermarked photos. You will receive on average 2-3x the amount of photos included in your package, and you will be able to choose which photos you’d like from those. Your gallery will expire 3 months after the delivery date.
